I remember the day my Indian Muslim family became Latino. It was 2006 and Ted Strickland was running as the Democratic nominee for governor of Ohio. My father declared our new identity with a "Latinos Unidos por Strickland" bumper sticker on the bac…

About Me
Founder and Director of MAFO 2008. Born and raised in Ohio by civically minded Indian-Muslim immigrants, I learned early on that giving back to my community was my duty as an American and as a Muslim – whether that was going door-to-door collecting money for the homeless in our city with my father or pitching in with an interfaith Habitat-for-Humanity home with my mother. My parents, as progressive as they are religious, sent me to a Jewish day school for nine years, where I learned Hebrew and about Judaism. On the weekends, I attended Sunday school at our mosque, learning Arabic and about Islam. My parents made sure that I knew the differences between Islam and Judaism, explaining the Islamic perspective on every topic I was taught at school. At the same time, they were ever careful to explain the respect we as Muslims should have for our Abrahamic brothers and sisters in faith. I truly believe that my own adherence to Islam as an adult is in part credited to my religious Jewish friends from my youth who welcomed me into their homes and community and shared with me the joy and spiritual fulfillment they felt from practicing their faith. Their commitment to their faith, encouraged me to explore and appreciate my own. I can be reached at: zeba.hk[at]gmail.com
Why I support Barack Obama
I think Barack Obama's pragmatic approach to the economy is exactly the kind of approach our country needs to ensure all families benefit from economic expansion instead of just the top 1%. On a personal level, I identify with his story in that my own story is a story only possible in America.
What Issues are Important to Me
Economy, Iraq, universal healthcare

Hi Zeba!
I didn't know the website was still going since the election was over. I am so
glad that Obama won. I think that he is going to be a great President and very
fair-minded as well. I sponsor children in the Middle East, in the Gaza Strip, 2
children in Lebanon, and one in Egypt (technically North Africa, I know). My parents also brought us up progressive with a strong sense of social justice.
The children I sponsor are Catholics like me but in the Maronite, Syriac
and Latin traditions. I haven't heard though how my little friend Dana is doing
in Gaza, or her family. At least they're alive though. That's all I know. We're
praying for them. My mom's been pretty upset about the whole ordeal. Looking forward to keeping in touch!
Salaam!
Jenn

Dear Zeba,
What is your opinion regarding the current war & bombarding on innocent Palestinian Muslims? What will be your web site's roll in this situation & being a Muslim democrat what initiative have you taken to represent this to the Obama and Bush administration? Your response would be appreciated!
Thank you,
Dr. Mohammed Zafar Hussaini

This was a slap in the face of every Muslim hoping for peace in the middle east specially for our Palestinian Brothers and sisters. I have been shocked by his pick of Rahm Emmanuel the person that believes in the Talmud Israeli doctrine of hate towards Muslims. It is quiet awkward that there was 100K Israel marching of Rabin assassination day with only signs of peace and unity but no news outlet covered it. Please someone start a petition of having either a Muslim like Khalid Rashidi in the cabinet or if not Muslims someone like GEN. ANTHONY ZINNI OR COLIN POWELL OR SOMEONE LIKE SAMANTHA POWERS. As far as talking about which kind of Dog or Cat he should pick this is ridiculous. A SALAAM ALAIKUM

Salam,

We did what we could. I went to Nevada with Drive for Change Campaign.
I called FL voters every morning after Fajr for a week
I worked at our local silicon valley office last sat, sun, mon, tuesday all days
Most importantly we made lots of dua ...
Make a niyah to sacrafice 2 goats and feed the poor in Burma ...

But now I do not know ...
I hope Allah will guide our new president ...
We can only Trust Allah and continue to pray harder ....
so far things are not very encouraging -
